PRINCE PORT.- Equipment from States Joined they disembarked in Haiti with the purpose of coordinating the arrival of the Kenyan mission, scheduled for the end of this month. Its main task will be to provide support to local security forces in their fight against criminal gangs that have plunged Port-au-Prince and other regions of the country into violence.
The Undersecretary of State, Todd Robinson, confirmed this operation, which coincides with the visit of the President of Kenya, William Ruto, to the White House starting on May 23. Although specific details about the deployment of the mission have not been revealed, it is estimated that it will consist of around 1,000 police officers and will be supported by the Pentagon in the construction of the necessary facilities.
The United States Department of Defense allocated nearly €190 million in security equipment to support this initiative.
According to a UN report, during the first quarter of 2024 more than 2,500 people have lost their lives or suffered serious injuries due to violence related to armed groups in Haiti, marking an alarming escalation compared to previous years.
The Port-au-Prince metropolitan region continues to be the epicenter of this crisis, with 80% of the victims concentrated in this area.
The UN warns of extremely violent clashes between armed groups, who seek to expand their territorial influence. Additionally, the violence triggered significant population displacement, with more than 360,000 people living outside their homes in Haiti.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports that in March alone, more than 53,000 people left Port-au-Prince due to increased attacks.
