The Israeli army (IDF) said on Tuesday morning it killed three men belonging to Palestinian armed groups in the Ibn Sina hospital in Jenin, in the northern West Bank. The Palestinian Authority’s Ministry of Health harshly criticized the attack for taking place inside a hospital, in violation of international standards. He also posted on his Facebook profile a video from the security cameras of the hospital, in which some men and women belonging to an undercover unit of the Israeli forces dressed as doctors and patients are seen taking off their disguises and handcuffing a person, placing him against the wall. The group then exits the frame moving through the hospital corridors with rifles in hand.
In a joint statement the Israeli army, the police and the Israeli intelligence agency, the Shin Bet, they said of killing Muhammad Jalamneh, 27, and two brothers, Muhammad and Basel Ghazawi. According to the IDF, Jalamneh was the spokesperson for the radical Palestinian group Hamas in the Jenin refugee camp and had planned an attack inspired by the events of October 7. Muhammad Ghazawi, on the other hand, had been involved in several attacks against Israeli troops in the West Bank, while Basel was a member of the armed group Islamic Jihad, the second largest in the Gaza Strip after Hamas, and considered a terrorist group by Israel, the United States and from most European countries. The statement reads that the three were planning “imminent” terrorist attacks.
Hamas said Israeli forces “killed three fighters,” including one of its members, and Islamic Jihad said both brothers belonged to the group. One of the two had been in hospital since October 25 for treatment.
After the October 7 attacks by Hamas, the situation between the Israeli army and the Palestinian population in the West Bank has worsened much. According to data cited by the Israeli newspaper Times of Israelsince then the IDF he arrested nearly 3,000 Palestinians wanted in the West Bank, including more than 1,350 believed to be affiliated with Hamas. According to the Palestinian Authority’s Ministry of Health, the Israeli army also killed more than 350 Palestinians living in the region during the same period.
Incursions have increased in particular in Jenin and in general in the northern West Bank, where Israel claims that the Palestinian Authority has lost control of the territory, now managed by armed groups such as Islamic Jihad. Jenin is considered the home of several Palestinian armed groups. Already in the summer of 2023 the IDF had carried out a military operation in the Jenin refugee camp, the largest in the last twenty years before the one against the Gaza Strip which is still ongoing.
