Since Saturday, various areas in southern France have been experiencing flooding due to the storm called “Monica”, which is causing heavy rain. On Sunday morning the French authorities said that there were six people missing, including two children, all in the department of Gard (the one whose capital is Nîmes), in Occitanie, one of the places where there was the heaviest rain. According to the French national meteorological service, more than 100 millimeters of rain fell in 24 hours on Saturday in the flat area of the Gard department.
An orange alert will still be in force on Sunday (the second most serious out of four) for possible flooding in the southern departments of Ardèche, Aveyron, Gard, Lozère and Var (the departments correspond to our provinces). In the Alpes-Maritimes department, in Provence, there will be an orange alert for possible flooding and another alert for the danger of avalanches. In recent months, heavy rains of this kind have been more frequent than usual in France.
