The intense coverage of this conflict by Palestinian journalists has led to a special mention from the Pulitzer Prizes for their brave work in covering the war in Gaza since October 7. The Pulitzer board also paid tribute to those journalists who lost their lives while reporting on the conflict.

In addition to honoring winners and finalists in 15 journalism categories, the Pulitzer Prizes also recognized distinguished work in areas such as books, music, and theater. The Associated Press won a Pulitzer Prize in photography for its coverage of the global migrant crisis at the US-Mexico border. The New York Times and the Washington Post each won three Pulitzer Prizes for their work in 2023.

The prestigious Pulitzer Prize for public service was awarded to ProPublica for a report that exposed the influence of billionaires on the U.S. Supreme Court. The awards, which honor the best in journalism of 2023, were announced via livestream at 3 p.m. ET.

The awards are administered by Columbia University in New York, where student demonstrations against the war in Gaza have taken place. The Board met outside Columbia last weekend to deliberate on the winners, and the winners receive a cash prize of $15,000.

This year’s Pulitzer finalists included reports that used artificial intelligence for researching and reporting, marking the first time the board required the disclosure of AI use. Established in the will of newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer in 1917, the Pulitzers have become the most prestigious honor in print journalism.

The Pulitzers also recognized works in fiction, drama, history, biography, poetry, and general nonfiction. The winners in these categories were celebrated alongside the journalists and media workers covering the war in Gaza.
