Passengers Rescued After Catamaran Breaks Up on High Seas
On February 12, 2024, 40 passengers were rescued from a catamaran that broke up on the high seas while traveling from the island of Cubagua to Margarita in Nueva Esparta state. The boat was split by strong waves shortly after departing from the island, leaving the passengers stranded in the water.
According to a report by VPItv, the passengers were rescued and transferred back to Cubagua, while authorities began the work to tow the damaged catamaran. Journalist Arnaldo Espinoza shared an image of the catamaran called “Mamale”, which fractured due to the strong waves on the journey between Cubagua and Margarita.
All passengers are reported to be safe and have returned to Cubagua. The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of traveling by sea, especially during rough weather conditions.
