A bar stool in Moe’s Tavern will remain empty in the future: Larry, the barfly, no longer drinks. “The Simpsons” let a character from the first hour die in Sunday’s episode (“Cremains of the Day”). When Larry stops moving, landlord Moe nudges him with a broom and he collapses dead on the counter.

Larry’s mother says that the patrons of Moe’s Tavern were his best friends and asks them for “good memories.” Unfortunately, despite spending a lot of time with their bar companion, they don’t have one – so they make up a story and scatter his ashes. It’s only when Larry’s mother gives the group a photo of them with Larry that they learn that his last name was officially “Dalrymple.”

Larry was apparently lonely

The series about the yellow family has been running since January 1990 and, with 35 seasons, is now the longest-running American sitcom. Larry has been there since season one. He only spoke once: in season two he meets Marge Simpson and asks who “that chick” is. Otherwise, Larry sat on his bar stool next to his friend Sam. Apart from the fact that he liked to drink, nothing was known about him.

Fans were shocked on social networks. “I can’t believe they killed Larry Dalrymple on The Simpsons last night,” one user wrote. Others noted that they didn’t even know what the long-standing character’s name was until this episode. The episode made some users think: “Joking aside, Larry’s life was actually pretty sad and tragic” and “Many of us are Larry.”
