Streaming start in January: This is the “cocaine queen” Griselda Blanco
The new Netflix series is about the notorious leader of the Medellín Cartel. Protagonist Sofía Vergara was sued by Blanco’s descendants.

“The only man I ever feared was a woman named Griselda Blanco,” drug lord Pablo Escobar is quoted as saying at the beginning of the Netflix series. The statement underscores the character of the ruthless cocaine queen in Miami’s drug wars of the 1970s and 1980s.
Griselda Blanco earned tens of millions of US dollars a month from the cocaine trade, writes “BBC”. Their empire once stretched across the United States, from New York to California. Before her arrest in February 1985, she was said to have had a net worth in the billions for manufacturing, importing and distributing cocaine into the United States.
She was released in 2004 and deported to Colombia. A few days before her release, three of her four sons were murdered. In September 2012, she was shot by gangsters in her car while leaving a butcher shop in her hometown of Medellín, Colombia. When the 69-year-old was dying, the pregnant daughter-in-law is said to have placed a Bible on her godmother’s chest.

The six-part miniseries appears on Netflix today. But even before publication, Netflix received unpleasant mail: According to a media report, the family of the cocaine godmother who was shot in 2012 is suing the streaming service. And leading actress Sofía Vergara is also listed as a defendant in court documents that are said to be available to TMZ.
The last remaining son of Blanco claims that he has been conducting interviews with several people for many years who wanted to try to tell his life story and that of his mother in a book and in a series. There were supposedly discussions with Netflix and the streaming service was interested, but those responsible did not want to use any of its details.
However, he has now learned that the new mini-series is based on many of his anecdotes – and he didn’t get any money for it. Netflix copied the family story and so he and his family sued. It would also allegedly violate the rights of Blanco’s children if they were depicted as characters in the miniseries without permission.
