This morning, April 29th, the auditorium of the Center for Applied Social Sciences (CCSA) at the State University of Maranhão (Uema) was the stage for an event celebrating Labor Day. The Management of the University, the Uema Workers Union (SINTUEMA) and the Uema Servers Association (Assuema) met with members of the academic community to celebrate the achievements achieved and discuss the challenges that still permeate the workers’ reality.

The president of SINTUEMA, Walber Tomé, highlighted the importance of celebrating this date, which refers to the historic struggle of workers for better working conditions. “Today is the day to celebrate Labor Day. We know the difficulties that the working class faces, but celebrating this date is important, as we have achieved some victories”, highlighted Tomé. He specifically mentioned the achievement of the 40% bonus, but highlighted that there is still a lot to be achieved and important demands to be met, to which the union will remain committed.

The president of Assuema, Socorro Carvalho, shared the feeling of gratitude and celebration, recognizing the crucial support from the rectory to achieve the workers’ achievements. “This fight belongs to everyone, the support of the rectory was essential so that we could obtain our achievements”, said Socorro, expressing confidence in better days for the category.

The rector of Uema, Walter Canales, emphasized the importance of valuing work and unity to achieve common goals. “Today we are celebrating Labor Day, a date that dignifies and magnifies us. It is also necessary to highlight this moment of unity, which is essential so that together we can achieve achievements”, highlighted Walter. He highlighted the recent achievement of a 40% increase in the academic support bonus for administrative support members (ADO) at Uema as a result of unity and dialogue between the parties involved.

The event at Uema not only celebrated the workers’ achievements, but also reinforced the ongoing commitment to the fight for better working conditions and the recognition of the importance of dialogue and unity to achieve these goals.

    About Labor Day:

Celebrated since the end of the 19th century, the date is a tribute to the eight North American labor leaders who died by hanging in Chicago – United States, in 1886. They were arrested and summarily tried for leading demonstrations that began on the first day of May that year. In Brazil, the date has been celebrated since 1895 and became a national holiday in September 1925, by a decree from President Artur Bernardes. Another very important point attributed to Labor Day was the creation of the Consolidation of Labor Laws (CLT), on May 1, 1943.
