UK. King Charles III diagnosed with cancer

The type of the monarch’s cancer has not been revealed, nor are any additional details known about the cancer’s stage or prognosis. According to the official statement, Carlos III began “regular treatments” for the disease this Monday.

Charles III, currently 75 years old, ascended the throne after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September 2022. The monarch had a prostate procedure at a private hospital in London just over a week ago.

“During the King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests identified a form of cancer,” Buckingham Palace said.

During his treatments, Carlos III “was advised by doctors” to postpone public commitments, but he will maintain his constitutional role as head of state.

Carlos III thanks the medical team “for the quick intervention, which was possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure”.

The monarch “remains completely positive about his treatment” and hopes to return to full duties “as soon as possible”.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace also clarified that the monarch decided to share the diagnosis with the public “to avoid speculation”, but also to “help public understanding of all those around the world who are affected by cancer”.

According to the BBC, Prince Harry, who resides in the United States, has already spoken to the monarch and will travel to the United Kingdom to visit him in the coming days.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wished the monarch a “full and speedy recovery.”
