UN Secretary-General António Guterres said at the meeting that we must reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45% by 2030 and reach net-zero emissions by 2050. And, developed countries must at least double down on their support to developing countries so that they can adapt to the growing number of climate shocks.
Guterres called on G20 members to dismantle coal infrastructure, OECD countries to phase out coal facilities by 2030, and all other countries to phase out coal facilities by 2040. He also called on all financial actors to abandon fossil fuel financing and invest in renewable energy.
Guterres said renewable energy technology should be seen as a global public good. The necessary raw materials should be available to all.
