Decisive green light from House of Commons to the proposed law implementing the so-called piano Ruanda bus for the disputed paid transfer to the African country of quotas of asylum seekers landed illegally in United Kingdom. The measure was approved with 320 votes in favor and 276 opposite. The conservative prime minister Rishi Sunak he had to face a rebellion by members of the right wing Tory avoiding a defeat with potentially catastrophic consequences for his government.

Sunak managed to repel the revolt of 60 MPs from the majority who had supported two amendments to make the text even more draconian at the cost of unhooking the Great Britain from some of the constraints foreseen by its membership of the European Convention on Human Rights. Changes to the provision were also forcefully requested in the debate in Parliament by leading figures of the party, such as the former Interior Minister and anti-immigration hawk Suella Braverman. “This is the last chance to make the bill work,” said Braverman, a staunch advocate for relocating asylum seekers to Africa. The two vice-presidents of the conservatives also came forward among the rebels, Lee Anderson e Brendan Clarke-Smith, even willing to resign from their positions in order to vote in favor of the amendments. There was also an intervention from the former prime minister via social media Boris Johnson who despite his forced exit from politics wanted to offer his support to the rebels. But at this evening’s showdown only a few Tory MPs, 11 irreduciblevoted against the measure, also thanks to some partial concessions from the executive compared to the amendments proposed by the internal right to try to limit the power of intervention of international justice, in defiance of the protests also coming from the UN.
According to BBC estimates, 30 no votes from the majority party, added to those from the opposition, would have been enough to scuttle the plan. Despite the green light for the law, not only will we now have to see its practical implementation, which involves the departure of the first plane with migrants on board for Rwanda, but at the same time weaknesses within the executive remain. Weaknesses highlighted by the Labor opposition leader Keir Starmer during the question time to the Municipalities. Starmer defined the plan as “a farce”, focusing not on the moral repercussions of the initiative opposed by NGOs in defense of human rights, but on the costs already incurred by the government without having transferred a single asylum seeker. In this regard, the president of Rwanda also spoke from Davos, Paul Kagame, offering its willingness to return the money paid by the Kingdom to the African country if the plan does not become reality. But Starmer also pointed the finger at Sunak for i 4,250 asylum seekers of which the Ministry of the Interior has lost track, underlining that they represent the85% of those destined to be taken to Africa, and for the prime minister’s inability to maintain some control over his party.
