After the abortion law, another legislative move arrives from Texas intended to fuel the tug-of-war between the White House and the conservative state. The State Senate has, in fact, approved a bill that prevents transgender athletes in public schools from competing in teams that match the gender they identify with.
If male at birth, they will be able to join male teams; if you are born female, in female teams. The bill, passed in the House Thursday, will land on Governor Greg Abbott’s desk. Transgender male athletes will only be able to play in men’s teams if there are no other options available for the sport.
According to Valoree Swanson, who presented the bill in the Senate, the measure avoids an unfair advantage of transgender females against biologically female athletes at birth, but that was not enough to stop the accusations of discrimination: “Depriving trans boys of the right to participate in school activities – Susan Broyles Sookman of the American Civil Liberties Union told CBS News – is wrong and is a violation of their rights ”.
