NEW YORK – The city of Charlottesville, Virginia removed the statue of Confederate General Robert Lee, who was considered a hero for the Southern Army – aligned for slavery – during the American Civil War. The statue had been at the center of legal disputes and protests for years.
The city announced yesterday the decision to dismantle the monument that 4 years ago, in 2017, had been at the center of the “Unite the Right” rally of white supremacists: one of the participants had deliberately targeted with the cars participating in a counter-demonstration, killing one person. “Removing this statue is a small step towards the goal of helping Charlottesville and America deal with the guilt of being prepared to destroy African American people for economic gain,” said the mayor of the city.
