Commuters will face significant restrictions in bus, road and subway traffic: The Verdi union has announced a “wave strike” starting next Monday – for a week on different days, especially on Friday.

A “wave strike” is expected to paralyze local transport in Hesse and almost all of Germany next week. According to the Verdi union, there will be strikes in the period from Monday, February 26th to Saturday, March 2nd – primarily all day and mostly for several days, as it was said on Thursday.

The main strike day is March 1st, which is also the climate strike day. In Hesse, as in previous campaigns, the buses in Wiesbaden, the trams and buses in Kassel as well as the trams and subways in Frankfurt are likely to be particularly affected. It is not yet known which days the strike will take place and where.

NVV: Outages in the Kassel city area

The North Hessian Transport Association (NVV) announced on Thursday that cancellations of trams and KVG buses in the entire Kassel city area (lines 1 to 29) must be expected on March 1st and on other individual days next week. The regional buses from line 30 onwards are unlikely to be affected.

RegioTrams from the surrounding area end at Kassel main station on strike days. There are also failures on the trams to Vellmar, Baunatal and through the Lossetal.

Working hours down, wages up

The background for the renewed strikes is the ongoing collective bargaining for the approximately 90,000 employees in municipal public transport in over 130 municipal companies nationwide.

The collective bargaining is about improving working conditions and relieving the burden on employees. In Hesse, for example, working hours are to be reduced by up to four hours and some employees are to be grouped higher.

Frankfurt, Offenbach, Wiesbaden, Gießen, Kassel Warning strikes in local transport: “We’ve had enough for a long time!”

Warning strikes in local transport have led to delays and cancellations in several cities. In Frankfurt, subways and trams were affected. Several thousand employees demonstrated on a Rhine bridge.
