It was a dirty win that VSK Osterholz-Scharmbeck achieved in the Lüneburg 3 district football league against SV Ippensen. Dirty because of the way the 2:1 (1:1) came about, but also dirty because the surface wasn’t actually suitable for a football game at a reasonable level – that’s how bad the pitch in the Klosterholz Stadium was from the rains immediately before and was affected during the game.
At first it actually seemed as if the weather was playing along: just in time for kick-off, the rain clouds cleared away and the sun came out. However, the game started anything but warmly for the VSK: with the first and only dangerous action in front of the hosts’ goal in the first half, SV Ippensen took the lead through Ole Brüggmann (10th). Previously, the VSK had already combined dangerously three times on the left side in front of the Ippenser goal, but the crosses from Sebastian Schade and Karim Kanafani found no takers in the center.
It was important that we made it 1-1 before the break.
VSK-Coach Thorsten Westphal
The district townspeople shook themselves briefly after conceding a goal, and just a minute after the Ippens team had taken the lead, Christoph Oberschelp scored the first shot on the guests’ goal, but this did not pose any major problems for SVI goalkeeper Florian Krause. He was the focus again after 23 minutes when he fished a free kick from VSK captain Marlo Burdorf out of the crease and deflected it for a corner. Shortly afterwards the time had come and Thorsten Westphal’s team rewarded themselves for their effort on the offensive: again they went over the strong left side, this time Jarno Schnieders brought the ball into the center. After a short poke in front of the goal, the ball landed at the feet of Felix Westphal, who netted to equalize (25.)
“It was important that we made it 1-1 before the break. Apart from her goal, Ippensen didn’t do anything in the first half,” explained Thorsten Westphal after the game. Control of the game remained completely in the hands of the hosts. The guests from the Rotenburg district only found relief through long balls, which then immediately landed back in their own half.
It was such a long ball that gave the guests their first dangerous approach to the goal since the opening goal shortly after the restart. A pass to the right wing slipped through the VSK defense, but Ippenser’s shot went just over the goal. The rest of the second half belonged almost exclusively to the VSK, but there was once again a lack of compelling chances.
Two chances to take the lead wasted
The biggest chance in the second half, when many spectators were already screaming for goal, resulted from a mistake in the visitors’ defense: a high ball into the penalty area slipped through and suddenly Karim Kanafani found himself free in front of the Ippenser goal but put it sideways instead of completing it myself. The pass could be clarified in dire need. Shortly afterwards, substitute Dominik Meinert had a good opportunity to finish after being served by Jan Brinkmann after a strong dribble, but he put the shot well wide of the goal from a good 16 meters.
But as we all know, all good things come in threes: When it came to their third chance within a few minutes, the VSK offensive didn’t have to be asked twice. After a fine pass from Ilja Ryabko to Jan Brinkmann, he stayed cool in front of Ippensen’s goalkeeper Florian Krause and pushed in for a 2-1 lead (75th). However, a long-range shot from Ilja Ryabko was the only offensive sign of life that the home team gave again.
Suddenly the guests discovered their offensive urge once again. Ole Brüggmann had the best chance of equalizing when he suddenly appeared free in front of the VSK goal but lofted the ball over the goal. “In the end we were simply fresher and wanted to win more and therefore deserved to win,” said VSK coach Thorsten Westphal after the final whistle about three important points.
