Warning strikes in public transport: SSB and VAG trains are not running

The ver.di union has called for a public transport warning strike in seven cities in BW on Thursday and Friday. Among others affected: Stuttgart, Freiburg and Karlsruhe.

This week, commuters in Baden-Württemberg will once again have to prepare for disruptions in public transport. As the ver.di union announced on Monday, local transport will be on strike on Thursday, February 29th and Friday, March 1st. This affects the local public transport companies in Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Heilbronn, Freiburg, Baden-Baden, Esslingen and Konstanz.

Last week, ver.di called for renewed warning strikes in local public transport. With the exception of Bavaria, all German federal states are affected. The reason for this is negotiations about new collective agreements for local public transport companies. The warning strikes started on Monday morning in Schleswig-Holstein, Saarland and Trier.

Light rail in Stuttgart does not run on Thursday and Friday

In Stuttgart, SSB buses and trains as well as the cable car, the cog railway, the Zacke bus and the SSB Flex on-demand service will not run on both days from the start of operations until the end of operations. There will also be no night buses running on the nights from Thursday to Friday and from Friday to Saturday. Customer service, lost property and the customer centers will also be closed and unavailable.

Excluded from the warning strike in and around Stuttgart are buses on lines 53, 54, 58, 60, 64, 66, 73 and 90, which are operated by contract companies for the SSB and therefore run. With the start of operations on Saturday, March 2, 2024, operations at the SSB should be back on schedule.

Trams in Freiburg affected by strikes on two days

Freiburger Verkehrs AG (VAG) also has no trams and, with a few exceptions, no buses running on Thursdays and Fridays from the start of operations until the end of operations. Also the Schauinslandbahn, the customer center pluspunkt and the VAG lost property office remain closed.

The warning strike is also likely to have an impact on travel to SC Freiburg’s Bundesliga home game against FC Bayern Munich, which takes place on Friday evening. Night traffic from Friday to Saturday is also severely affected: the N40 night bus route and the associated connecting taxi services to the surrounding communities are not running. Of the buses, only lines 15 and 32 will run on March 1st and around half of the trips will be on lines 24, 33 and 34. These are operated by private contractors.

Warning strike on public transport in Karlsruhe and Baden-Baden

The warning strike in public transport also affects Karlsruhe and Baden-Baden. There are no trams or city buses here. In addition, employees of the Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft (AVG) are to be called on strike. This means that AVG S-Bahn trains, which were not affected in the previous strikes, could also be canceled. The Karlsruhe transport company has used buses from third-party companies during past warning strikes.

There is no ferry between Konstanz and Meersburg

And the ferries between Konstanz and Meersburg (Lake Constance district) are also canceled on both days, as the Konstanz public utility company informed SWR. However, there should be alternative traffic: pedestrians and cyclists can switch to a passenger ship. Municipal bus transport in Konstanz is also affected by the warning strike. The catamaran between Konstanz and Friedrichshafen (Lake Constance district) runs against it. This was announced by the municipal utilities at the lake.

According to ver.di, there will be strikes “in waves” in all affected federal states this week. The labor disputes are planned on different days and the demands also differ from state to state. In Baden-Württemberg, around 6,500 employees are affected by collective bargaining. Among other things, ver.di wants to implement a reduction in working hours and a shift allowance. In addition, employees should be able to have delays fully credited as working time in the future.

Also nationwide Fridays For Future demonstrations on Friday

On March 1st, in addition to the warning strikes in local public transport, nationwide demonstrations by Fridays For Future (FFF) have been announced. The ver.di union and the climate protection organization have been working together for some time. Under the motto #WeDriveTogether, the alliance wants to fight for climate-friendly and fair mobility.
