What is Novichok, the nerve agent that may have killed Navalny

It is a series of chemical compounds that can cause death even in a few minutes – LaPresse /CorriereTv

(LaPresse) According to the widow of Alexei Navalnythe Russian political opponent was allegedly poisoned and killed with the Novichok.
Novichok (‘newcomer’ in Russian) refers to a series of neurotoxins produced in the Soviet Union between the 1970s and 1990s. Once in contact with the skin or inhaled, these toxins can lead to death within minutes.
Specifically, these chemical compounds inhibit the acetylcholinesterase enzyme, preventing the metabolism of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Interfering with the activity of neurotransmitters, which are essential for regulating the nervous system, end up causing asphyxia and cardiac arrest.
Novichok poisoning can be treated with antidotes such as atropine and oxime, but it is not certain that permanent damage can be avoided in any case. Novichok is at the center of many of the best-known cases of Russian dissidents dying or near death due to poisoning.
In 2020, Navalny himself was at the center of a case of Novichok poisoning, which was applied to his underwear and from which he managed to escape unharmed. Novichok is ideal for operations of this type because small quantities of the substance are enough to cause death and it is difficult to trace them in the body
