Whooping cough in the Czech Republic: State Health Institute reports first death in 2024

In the Czech Republic, a person died of whooping cough for the first time this year. The State Health Institute (SZÚ) reported this on Monday. The person was between the ages of 55 and 64, it said. The health department responded to the report later in the afternoon and said the man had died in February and that the immediate cause of death was not whooping cough.

According to the State Institute of Health, 827 cases of whooping cough were recorded in the last seven days. Since the beginning of the year, over 3,100 cases have been reported. Comparable numbers were last seen in 1963. According to experts, it can be assumed that the number of cases from the previous record year will be exceeded in the next few days.
