DFB Cup as a chewing gum competition

The upcoming quarter-finals in the DFB Cup will be played on four different days – and will last two weeks. The reason for the innovation has a financial background.

For some critics of this regulation, the competition is like chewing gum – but the decision is the decision! For the first time in recent history, the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup (from Tuesday, January 30th, with the game FC St. Pauli – Fortuna Düsseldorf from 8:45 p.m. in the live ticker) will be played over a period of more than two weeks. What’s more: the four games will kick off on four different days – because that’s what the new TV contract stipulates.

To explain: Since the 2022/’23 season, a new contract has been in effect for the DFB Cup, which should bring in significantly more money for the association. In this context, it was also decided to schedule the four quarter-final games on a different day. As a result, parallel events no longer take place and the individual live games can generate more attention and therefore more income.

In the last cup season there was also a round-robin event lasting two weeks. At that time, the DFB had decided on the round of 16, which was then played from the end of January to February 8th.

As usual, the quarter-finals took place over two days. Until 2026 – when the TV contract expires – the quarter-finals should always be split into four different days.
