Second division soccer team Hannover 96 has ended its winless streak. The Lower Saxony team defeated 1. FC Nürnberg 3-0 (2-0) on Friday and put on a strong performance, especially in the first half. The celebrated hero was double goalscorer Havard Nielsen.

The Norwegian scored in the first half – Hannover’s best 45 minutes this season – in the 6th and 38th minutes, while substitute Cedric Teuchert scored with the last action of the game (90+2). Six days after the meager 2-2 draw at SV Elversberg, coach Stefan Leitl’s team was on the move from the first minute and created a number of good scoring opportunities. Despite a significantly weaker second half, the victory could, perhaps even should, have been higher.

Hannover overtakes Nuremberg in the table

But even so, the “Reds” were able to celebrate their first success after six games without a threesome. Their last victory was in the Lower Saxony derby against Eintracht Braunschweig at the beginning of November. Double goalscorer Nielsen was happy “that I was able to help the boys” and was very satisfied with the “great game with lots of scoring chances”.

His coach praised his team’s “super energy” that evening, but criticized “that we let the club live” in view of the many missed chances to score. With now 28 points, 96 overtook the Franconians and is back in the top third of the table, at least until Saturday. On Sunday, February 4th, Hannover will face the northern duel with the struggling FC Hansa Rostock (1:30 p.m., in the NDR Livecenter)

Nielsen scores from a Leopold free kick

A free kick got the ball off to a dream start: Enzo Leopold crossed the ball from the left into the six-yard box, where Nielsen extended the ball with his foot into the far corner. No chance for Carl Klaus in the guest goal (6th).

And Lower Saxony wanted to add more, but Nicolo Tresoldi only hit the side netting with his shot from around 16 meters (12th). The game was then interrupted for several minutes. Tennis balls flew from the hosts’ corner onto the pitch in protest against the planned investor entry into the DFL.

96 misses a series of great opportunities

But that didn’t detract from the lively performance of the “Reds”. Quite the opposite: Sebastian Ernst (20th), Derrick Köhn (27th), Tresoldi after a strong solo (32nd), Marcel Halstenberg (33rd) and again Tresoldi, whose header hit the crossbar (36th), had the best Opportunities, but initially missed the second goal.

And so it was Nielsen again who rewarded the Leitl team: Ernst won the ball on the right side in midfield. Leopold passed it to the left to Köhn. The Norwegian only had to head in his exemplary cross while he was completely free (38′). The overdue 2-0 and the halftime score.

Uzun hits the post, Zieler saves well

At the start again Hannover took things noticeably calmer. Nevertheless, the third goal was almost achieved: club goalkeeper Klaus reacted strongly against the shots from Tresoldi and Kolja Oudenne (58th). And suddenly the Lower Saxony team were lucky and needed an alert Ron-Robert Zieler in goal: First FCN youngster Can Uzun nailed the ball to the post, then Zieler saved Lukas Kehler’s follow-up shot (61′).

As good as the first half was, the 96 players suddenly seemed inexplicably inhibited. Many balls were lost quickly, many duels that were won in the first half were lost.

Aluminum hits en masse, then Teuchert scores

It took until the 75th minute for the team to stabilize again. And then the proliferation of opportunities continued: First Ernst, who hit the crossbar from six meters (75th), and Köhn, who was denied by Klaus (78th), missed the decision.

Then Teuchert and Leopold (Pfosten, 82nd) and Ernst again (Latte, 84th) forgave. In the end it didn’t matter because Teuchert Klaus went around in injury time after a counterattack, slotted into the empty goal and Lower Saxony was able to celebrate again after six games without a win.
