Servette is in the final of the Swiss Cup for the first time since winning the title in 2001. Geneva won the semi-final against Winterthur 1-0. Timothé Cognat became the match winner, scoring the winning goal for the guests in the 88th minute.

A minute before the end of regular time, the Frenchman got the ball completely unchallenged in the penalty area after a low cross from Keigo Tsunemoto and gave Marvin Keller no chance to defend in the Winterthur goal.

All in all, it was a rather happy success for the guests from Geneva. Coach René Weiler’s highly gifted team owed a lot. The Grenats only managed to please in the quarter of an hour before the break. Striker Takuma Nishimura narrowly missed the opening goal after a cross. In addition, Souleymane Diaby practically cleared Bendeguz Bolla, who was ready to shoot, with the half-time whistle.

The home team owned the starting phase of both halves. Time and again it was the agile Sayfallah Ltaief who posed problems for the Geneva backline and especially Tsunemoto. But neither he nor Matteo Di Giusto wanted to score. Winterthur’s number 10 had the best opportunity in the first half. After a wonderful pass from Randy Schneider, he finished freely in the penalty area. However, his shot had neither the pressure nor the precision necessary to pose serious problems for Jérémy Frick in the Servette goal.

Cognat out of nowhere

After Winterthur’s pressure phase at the beginning of the second half, there were only a few scenes in the goal area on both sides. In none of them was it really dangerous. When everyone was already expecting extra time, Cognat struck.

For Servette it was the first win in the fourth meeting with Winterthur this season. The Grenats qualified for the cup final for the first time since 2001. At that time they also won the title thanks to a 3-0 win over Yverdon. Lugano awaits in the final on June 2nd in the Wankdorf Stadium in Bern. The French-speaking Swiss still have a score to settle with the Ticino people. Last year, Servette lost to Lugano in the semi-finals 3:5 after a penalty shootout.

    Cognat with the opening goal

Out of nowhere, Geneva took the lead two minutes before the end. After a corner, Winti doesn’t get the ball out of the danger zone via Stevanovic and Rouiller gets the ball to Tsunemoto, who finds Cognat with a flat cross, who can overcome Keller from a short distance and shakes the visitors’ block.

  • 85.

    Burkart brings some momentum

Burkart gets a corner for the home team with his first action. Schneider brings it into the penalty area, where Turkes gets the ball, but with his hybrid between shot and cross he finds neither the goal nor his teammates.

  • 79.

    Less dangerous than it looked

Lekaj knocks Nishimura off his feet, giving Servette a free kick. Stevanovic brings the ball into the penalty area, where Winti can’t get the ball away properly, but neither Crivelli nor Nishimura can take advantage, so although it felt like a dangerous chance, there was ultimately no real danger of scoring.

  • 76.

    Next chance fizzled out

For a change, Servette again with an offensive action. After a blocked shot by Nishimura, the ball comes to Stevanovic, who looks for Kutesa with his cross, but he doesn’t get the header as he wanted, so this chance is also lost.

  • 71.

Arnold’s header just missed the goal

After the foul on Ltaeif, Randy Schneider takes the free kick dangerously into the opponent’s penalty area, where Arnold climbs the highest but puts his header just next to the left post.

  • 66.

    Stadium sold out

The speaker reports 8,400 football fans in attendance – a sold-out house, of course. Those just mentioned immediately cheer themselves after the announcement.

  • 63.

    Cross doesn’t arrive

Ltaeif moves inside for once and leaves Dylan Bronn standing, but his high cross towards Turkes can just about be defused by a rushing out Jérémy Frick.

  • 56.

Frick a little unsure for once

A little uncertainty for Jérémy Frick, who was only able to hold on to a cross from the right when he followed up. Important because Winti striker Anthony Baroan would have been standing behind him ready to take a shot.

  • 54.

    Too stubborn?

Ltaief makes Tsunemoto look old with a dribble on the left side and then has a lot of time, perhaps too much time, but then decides to finish with the outside of his foot instead of a cross to his teammate. The second would probably have been the better option, because Frick is certainly there.

  • 52.

    Bolla just missed the goal

Kutesa with a good eye for Nishimura, who can cross on the left side and serve Bolla, whose direct shot narrowly misses the Winti goal.

  • 49.

    Pain in Frick

Di Giusto unfortunately hits Servette goalie Frick with a tackle after he speculated in vain on a long ball. However, the Geneva goalkeeper grits his teeth and continues playing for the time being despite what was apparently painful contact.

  • 48.

    Ltaeif with too much reserve

Good chance for Winti. After a cross from Sidler, Frick’s hand is still there, but he unintentionally provides an almost perfect assist for Ltaeif, who has a little too much left behind and cannot hit the half-orphaned goal.

  • 46.

    Kick-off for the second half

The ball is rolling again. Both teams play unchanged.

  • 45.

    Pause!

On time and without added time, referee Lukas Fähndrich invites him into the dressing room. The score between Winterthur and Servette is 0-0 after 45 minutes played.

  • 43.

    Tactical waiting

We are approaching halftime in a game in which the tension from AZ is palpable. Both teams approach their work with a lot of reverence and, above all, are anxious to go into the dressing room without conceding a goal.

  • 40.

    Direct acceptance is too flippant

Good cross from Kutesa, who aims at his teammate Bolla in the penalty area, but his direct shot on goal is sub-optimal. At least there is the next corner for the Calvinstadt team, which almost leads to a counterattack for Winti.

  • 34.

    Keller is ready

Tsunemoto tries to find compatriot Nishimura with a sharp cross, but he is prevented from heading the ball at the last moment thanks to a courageous intervention from Marvin Keller.

  • 30.

    Servette is simply too imprecise

Kutesa, who has often been in a losing position here, has some space on the left for once and hits a good cross into the penalty area, where Stevanovic actually manages to head the ball, but is unable to achieve enough precision behind the ball, so FCW -Goalie Keller doesn’t even have to intervene.

  • 27.

    No penalty

Delicate scene in the Winti penalty area: After an attack by Cognat seems to have already been resolved, Sidler hits his team-mate Gantenbein in the body with his release, who luckily has his hands on his body, so there is “only” a corner for Servette.

  • 23.

    Servette corner remains harmless

Diaby clears a Cognat cross to the corner. Bolla brings this into the Winti penalty area, where Dylan Bronn rises highest, but lacks precision behind his header, which clearly misses Marvin Keller’s goal.

  • 20.

    Winterthur with the better start

After twenty minutes of play, it can be said that the hosts are the more active team and have more ability to get to the goal. Sayfallah Ltaief in particular creates a lot of danger with almost every action he takes. If Servette wants to keep the zero here, you definitely don’t have to let the Winti whirlwind off a short leash…

  • 16.

    Frick excels

First really good chance for the home team. After a nice combination from Eulachstadt, Ltaief finds the gap and plays colleague Di Giusto free, whose curling shot is sure prey for Jérémy Frick.

  • 13.

    Again and again Ltaief

The Winterthur team keep looking for Ltaief on the left side and he continues to make life difficult for his opponent Tsunemoto, but in his new attempt to create a goal threat, he and his teammate Rouiller can just barely be separated from the ball.

  • 10.

    Free kick into the wall

After a foul on Nishimura, Servette gets a free kick from around 25 meters. Bolla puts the ball down, but it gets stuck on the wall, where Baroan catches a humming head in return for the blocked free kick.

  • 9.

    Servette with a first advance

Almost a first big chance for the Grenats. After a long ball into the penalty area, Nishimura wants to pass to Cognat, but he is half a step too late and cannot take advantage of a potentially very good finishing opportunity.

  • 6.

    Ball in the outside net

Again this Sayfallah Ltaief, who is played with a long pass on the left flank, Tsunemoto then cheekily tunnels, but then only hits the side netting with his shot from an acute angle.

  • 3.

    The mood arises

It’s getting really loud for the first time on the Schützenwiese. Ltaief is sent steeply towards the opponent’s penalty area, simply leaves Rouiller standing and brings a dangerous cross into the middle, where Mazikou was careful and was able to clear with a courageous tackle.

  • 1.

    Kick-off

The ball is rolling on the Schützenwiese. Who can take care of the first dangerous action?

  • 0.

    The lineups are there

Winterthur starts with the following eleven:
