Meschack Elia, Silvere Ganvoula and Joël Monteiro were the goal scorers in YB’s 3-0 home win against GC. The Bernese team has thus extended their lead at the top of the table: They are now four points ahead of Servette.

YB interim coach Joël Magnin is relying on six new players in the starting lineup compared to the match at Yverdon on Easter Monday: Saidy Janko, Mohamed Ali Camara, Aurèle Amenda, Ebrima Colley, Lukasz Lakomy and Silvere Ganvoula are in the GC starting lineup. “An early goal would help us,” says Magnin. As soon as the game started, exactly that happened – YB took the lead in the 6th minute. Meschack Elia gets the ball on the edge of the penalty area and scores with a precise shot to make it 1-0.

The Young Boys, who will be competing in the Wankdorf this evening in special black jerseys, are following through and are impressive with their determination on the offensive. After 18 minutes, they increased their lead to 2-0 through Ganvoula, and just three minutes later they were successful for the third time. After a powerful push from Janko, Joël Monteiro can effortlessly push the ball over the line.

YB has further favorable options until the break. Elia (33′) narrowly misses, and after a shot from Ganvoula the ball hits the crossbar (45′). But the lead is also comfortable, deserved and the reward for a serious performance. “We have to keep pushing and finish,” demands Janko at the break.

In front of 29,071 spectators, YB managed to make it 3-0 in the second half. In the 86th minute, Lakomy made it 4-0 with a header after Darian Males’ preparatory work. And in the 93rd minute, Elia’s fourth goal was disallowed due to an offside position.

The Bernese solved the task so safely and, above all, thanks to their great efficiency in the first 21 minutes. After the break, they don’t allow the game to take an unpleasant turn. And they don’t concede a goal for the second time in a row. “We got off to a dream start,” says Joël Magnin, “and it’s also positive that we kept a clean sheet again.” He was less satisfied with the performance after the break: “There was a lack of intensity in the second half. We have to work on maintaining the mentality we showed at the beginning for 90 minutes.”

With these three points against GC, YB extends its lead at the top. There is now a four point difference between first pursuer Servette. Lugano in third place is six points behind.

YB continues next Sunday in the Credit Suisse Super League with the away game at FC St. Gallen (4:30 p.m.). Joël Magnin is confident about the task: “I expect a difficult game. But the win against GC gives us vitamins for Sunday.”
