Without demanding a ceasefire, ICJ demands protection of Palestinians – UN Regional Information Office

The International Court of Justice has not called for a cease-fire in Gaza, but in a ruling on interim measures in the case brought by South Africa against Israel, the court says that Israel must do everything in its power to avoid killing Palestinians, inflicting serious physical or psychological harm or introduce measures that prevent Palestinian women from giving birth. Israel is required to submit a report within one month.

Today’s ruling covers only South Africa’s request for a cease-fire until the court’s final decision on genocide. This decision is expected to take several years. While it does not call for a ceasefire, it recognizes that the people of Gaza should enjoy some protection.

The International Court of Justice states that Israel must ensure that the military does not commit genocide, and that the country must prevent and punish all public statements that could be considered calls for genocide in Gaza. It also calls for measures to ensure humanitarian access to Gaza.

The court’s decisions are binding, but there is no enforcement mechanism.
