Yoshiko Watanabe e David Lloyd a Casale Comics and Games,
exhibitions and meetings for two great authors of the world of comics
On May 25th and 26th they are among the protagonists of an event that animates the capital of Monferrato with many initiatives dedicated to Comics
Casale Monferrato 22 April 2024 – Two sacred monsters of global author comics will be protagonists at the next edition of Casalecomics & Games scheduled in Casale Monferrato on 25 and 26 May.
Yoshiko Watanabe, the creator of Astro Boy, Kimba – The White Lion, The Monkey, Hurricane Polimar, Doraemon but also the creator of classics of European animation such as The Little Seagull and the Cat and The Blue Arrow.
David Lloyd cartoonist whose name is inextricably linked to V for Vendetta, Alan Moore’s masterpiece for which he was awarded an award at the Angoulême Festival in 1990 and from which James McTeigue’s film with Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman was made in 2006 .
It will be possible to meet both at the large Artist Alley set up at the Castello dei Paleologi where the two authors will be protagonists of meetings dedicated to their fans. Loyd, in particular, on Sunday 26th, will be on stage with Mario Petillo for an hour of questions and answers on his career. Yoshiko Watanabe will make a limited edition autographed print available to her admirers.
Above all, it will be possible to delve deeper into their art in two exhibitions dedicated to the Castle which will retrace their career through a vast selection of works.
In addition to these two big ones, Casale Comics 2024 will offer a lot to lovers of author comics. Much of the Castle will be dedicated to the ninth art, with around a hundred cartoonists gathered in the Artist Alley and another great protagonist of Italian comics Francesco Barbieri also at the center of an exhibition in the rooms of the fortress. Also dedicated to author’s comics are three exhibitions that will enliven the most beautiful and unusual places in the center of the capital of Monferrato.
The protagonists
David Lloyd, in addition to having contributed with Alan Moore to the characterization of the protagonist with the iconic Guy Fawkes mask, creating a real cultural phenomenon, also collaborated with Marvel Comics creating the character of Night Raven. He has put his signature on many collaborations, starting with War Stories, written by Garth Ennis for DC Comics, and Global Frequency by Warren Ellis, published by Wildstorm. In Italy his works are published by Magic Press and Edizioni NPE. David Lloyd will be at Casale Comics & Games on both Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th, available for signing copies, autographs and photos in a dedicated area, together with Aces Weekly, his comic art magazine.
Yoshiko Watanabe Graduated in theatrical scenography at Musashino Art University, she worked at Mushi Production, founded by Osamu Tezuka, from 1963 to 1972. She worked alongside the master as an assistant and participated in the creation of the first Anime series including Astro Boy, Kimba – The White Lion , The Monkey, Princess Sapphire, Rocky Joe and Bem. It was a prolific decade that also saw her debut as an illustrator for a series of fairy tale books that were very popular at the time. The very suggestive drawings were exhibited at the Romics 2023 solo exhibition. Subsequently she will return to work alongside Master Tezuka for the development of films such as Cleopatra, One Thousand and One Nights, and Phoenix – the Firebird.
Having moved to Italy in 1973, she worked as an Animator and Storyboard Artist for various Roman studios, and made her debut as a cartoonist for Tiramolla and Topolino. Per Più, a magazine from the Domus publishing house, illustrates trendy brands and anime including the Masters of the Universe, Poochie, Pistillo, Bia, Kyashan, Hurricane Polimar, Doraemon, Madmoiselle Anne, Galaxy Express 999, Starzinger, and Historical comics on Indians of America, Renaissance Artists and Conspiracies in Ancient Rome
Among the animated films in which he participated, the most notable are The Little Seagull and the Cat, The Blue Arrow, Johan Padan, Opopomoz, Aida of the Trees. Among the television series, The Last of the Mohicans, The Black Corsair, Winx. In 2008 he had a lucky meeting with the budding screenwriter Giovanni Masi: after years in newsstand publishing he created his first graphic novel: The Story of Sayo (Edizioni Kappa); later Sute – the Spirit Child and Donran (GP Publishing).
In the following years he will be in bookstores with “Come un balleto di musica Rock” with Stefano Simeone (Star Comics) and Animal Farm with Alessandro Ruggeri. Noraneko (Cosmo Edizioni) is her book that sees her as a unique Author. You currently teach at the Roman School of Comics (SRF) in Rome.
