Antoine Fuqua

Rome, 21 April 2021 – Antoine Fuqua he is most famous as a director of action thrillers, see for example ‘The Equalizer’, ‘Training Day’ and ‘Shooter’. But with around seventy directors behind him, his shoulders are broad enough to point to a new film adaptation of the drama. ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’, a play by Tennessee Williams already brought to the cinema in 1958, starring Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor. The new film will have a cast composed entirely of African Americans: an idea that comes from an all-black theatrical production in 2008, which sold out on Broadway for 19 weeks, making it the best grossing of that season.

In addition to the general approach to the cast, which has yet to be officially cast, Antoine Fuqua also plans to include some new narrative elements, also in this case making the intuition of the 2008 show his own. We do not know who will write the script or what will be the novelties in the plot, but we remember that the work of Tennessee Williams has as protagonists Brick, a former athlete now alcoholic, his wife Maggie who suffers from her husband’s sexual disinterest in her, and the patriarch of the Brick family, a very sick, proud, sarcastic, and all-in-one man.

The title of the play refers to a statement by Maggie, who in an argument with her husband tells him that she feels, in fact, like a cat on a hot roof: that is, he has achieved a social position with difficulty, but feels it is in danger because the relationship is not going as he would like and does not lead to the birth of a child.
