Suez-Smat agreement to make the Po even more drinkable in Turin

by admin

Smat (Società Metropolitana Acque Torino) has assigned to Suez, as leader of the consortium that includes Cogeis, Mattioda Pierino & figli, Ritonnaro Costruzioni, and I.Co.P., the contract for the modernization and extension of the water treatment plant waters of the Po in Turin. The contract, which has a duration of 5 years and a value of approximately 85 million euros, provides for the construction of new treatment lines that allow for an increase in the supply of drinking water from 2500 liters per second to 3500 liters per second.

«The plant – says Suez – will make use of the latest generation technologies in the field of water purification. In particular, the ultrafiltration sections with membranes under pressure and immersed will guarantee a superior quality of the water produced, thanks also to an advanced treatment with ozone that will improve the efficiency of the removal of organic matter and microorganisms ».

For its part, with this investment, Smat aims to equip itself with technologies capable of ensuring a regular flow of drinking water, even in the event of an emergency or drought. The purification plants of the Po cover 17% of the drinking water produced and Smat, through a network of approximately 11,100 kilometers, is able to deliver an average daily flow of 7,000 liters per second on the days of maximum consumption.

«The extension and modernization of the plant – says Aurélia Carrere CEO of Suez in Italy – will require careful and complex planning. Suez, together with its partners, will make its teams and know-how available in order to guarantee a quality drinking water supply service for the entire duration of the works ». Present on 5 continents, Suez provides sanitation to 64 million inhabitants and produces 7.1 billion m3 of drinking water. “By 2030, our Group – continues Carrere – aims at 100% sustainable solutions, with a positive impact on the environment, health and climate”. In 2020, Suez generated a total turnover of 17.2 billion euros.
