Accidents at work, Landini: “The model does not work, regulate subcontracts and focus on prevention”

The theme of accidents at work is removed, the deaths are increasing when there is a productive recovery. But we must face it starting from the rules on subcontracting: this was stated by the general secretary of the CGIL, Maurizio Landini, interviewed by Radio1 about the accidents at work and the deaths in Turin of three workers due to the breakdown of a crane. «It is the model that does not work, we are talking about accidents affecting people who work on contract and subcontracting in a sector in which demand has increased a lot. There is the logic that in order to work, health, safety and prevention are not taken on as a central element. Prevention means training of people and maintenance of machinery ».

The need, for Landini, is that of a cultural change towards prevention: «We need to change direction. There are choices that cannot be postponed. The logic of profit and working in any conditions is not acceptable. The same labor inspectorate tells us that the investigations carried out in the construction sites have found irregularities in 9 cases out of ten ». According to Landini, the national prosecutor against accidents at work «is one of the things to do because it means having coordination between all activities. It is necessary to act on prevention – he stresses – to overcome the level of insecurity that exists in the workplace, to overcome the logic of subcontracting to the maximum downside. The logistics contract was applied to the workers who died. We are asking for a license with points for companies on safety that allows us to establish the quality of that company and whether it can compete for public tenders. What was done a few months ago on public procurement and that is that if a company that wins a contract decides to subcontract activities, it must guarantee the same protections to subcontract workers, it must become a law of the entire private sector. In all sectors – he concludes – the logic of subcontracting and the fake cooperative is the model with which we work. From the public sector to services to commerce to industry. This increases job insecurity and insecurity ”.
