Cupra Formentor is updated: new hybrid engines and more technology on board

Cupra updates Formentor, the model born in 2019 as a bet: to propose the first model of the brand born from an offshoot of Seat, in an original SUV coupé / fastback format with a unique and well-characterized style and above all with no points in common, except for the MQB platform, with other Seat or Volkswagen Group models. The gamble was won: Formentor is a success and has become an instant classic, almost an icon if not a brand within the brand because the name Formentor is almost disconnected from its brand. And the numbers are clear: 120,000 units delivered all over the world (+23% compared to 2022), Formentor, last year, conquered the top of the charts and the best-selling model of the Iberian brand

Now the Spanish high-wheeled fastback is updated: the style does not change radically because the changes are concentrated on aesthetic details and in the luminous signature of the groupsets, but there are new engines and more technology. On the outside, a redesigned shark nose with the Cupra logo integrated into the bonnet. The LED matrix headlights (optional) have been revised with a marked triangular light signature. The integrated and illuminated logo stands out at the rear. Updates also in the interior: the perceived quality has improved and there are new or redesigned elements such as the central console, the door panels, the dashboard and the upholstery. The materials, which enrich the passenger compartment, have also been updated and embrace a more sustainable approach with enveloping sports seats covered in recycled microfibre or ecologically treated leather.

More technology on board with infotainment with a revised user interface and a larger screen, now 12.9”. Also on board is an unprecedented audio system with 12 speakers from Sennheiser, a well-known headphone brand with its own Mobility division which has entered the world of original equipment car stereos (also available as an option). It is possible to wirelessly charge your smartphone at high power (15 w) using a refrigerated support area to prevent the phone from overheating on hot summer days.

The new Formentor will be available with a new generation of plug-in hybrid engines (e-Hybrid) that deliver up to 272 hp (200 kW), with over 100 km of fully electric autonomy and now compatible with direct current fast charging up to at 50 kW. Furthermore, there is a new 1.5-litre petrol engine (TSI), which delivers 333 hp (245 kW) and is equipped with torque splitter technology. This is an electro-hydraulic solution essentially composed of two clutches mounted on the rear axle which manages to distribute torque independently to the individual wheels.

The customer will still have a wide choice: in addition to the plug-in version, a wide range of engines will be available, and four different types of powertrain: a direct injection petrol engine, a mild hybrid solution, a “classic” diesel and indeed the new generation of plug-in hybrid engines. In total, eight different powertrain options are available with output ranging from 150 to 333 horsepower in two- or four-wheel drive.
