Iraq: missiles on Erbil, the US consulate as possible target

Several missiles were launched in the evening near the US consulate in Erbil in northwestern Iraq. This was reported by various media, citing the Iraqi news agency INA. The governor of Erbil, Omed Khoshnaw, said that more missiles have fallen in the area, however specifying that it is not clear whether the target was the American consulate or the city airport. According to the INA, five explosions were heard in the attack. Many videos shared on social media show several loud explosions in the area.

According to Saman Barzanji, minister of health in the province of Iraqi Kurdistan, quoted by state television there would be “no casualties after the explosion in Erbil”. Iranian opposition sources reported by Arab media and other Iraqi Kurdish sources report that the rockets were launched from Iranian territory. Near the US consulate is the US base at Erbil International Airport, which was hit by a missile attack last September, on the 20th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. The airport of Erbil, the capital of the Kurdish autonomous region, has been attacked several times in the last year, including by drones carrying explosives.
