Amazon workers in the borough of Staten Island, New York, voted to unionize, marking a first historic success for the union in the United States in the retail giant’s history. Warehouse workers cast 2,654 votes in favor of a union, giving the fledgling Amazon Labor Union enough support to win.
According to the National Labor Relations Board, which is overseeing the trial, 2,131 workers turned down the union offer. The 67 votes that were contested by Amazon or the Amazon Labor Union (Alu) were not enough to influence the result. The yes passed with 55% of the votes. 57% of the more than 8,300 workers on the voter list voted.
