Germany is changing when it comes to dealing with cannabis.

The first prison inmates are said to have been released early as part of the new cannabis law, as BR24 reported.

The release of 125 convicts last month highlights a fundamental shift in the jurisprudence.

125 people are said to have been released early from prison across the country last month. According to the report, this happened as a result of the new cannabis law coming into force BR24 from May 5th. As the ARD studio also reports, 24 prisoners were released in Bavaria alone.

The measure affects people convicted of cannabis offenses under the provisions of the old law. The legalization of a limited amount of cannabis for personal use from April 1st will therefore have a direct impact on the criminal justice system and the cases already tried. The overturning of previous judgments and the adjustment of sentences are now the focus of legal practice.

Research by the ARD capital studio suggests that at least 10,000 more cases are subject to re-examination. However, this review proves to be challenging in many cases. These are often complex “mixed cases” in which cannabis offenses only make up part of the crimes. Judges would now be faced with the difficult task of determining appropriate sentences for these cases.
