According to Alvario Lario, president of the UN agency for rural development (Ifad), in Africa agri-food systems can offer unlimited opportunities for the millions of young people who enter the job market every year.

In a note released from Rome, Lario underlines: “young people need incentives and opportunities that motivate them to continue building on the legacies of their parents and grandparents. We can see this clearly in the so-called “youth earthquake” in Africa. Agri-food systems can provide unlimited opportunities for the millions of rural youth who enter the job market every year. Unfortunately, the alternatives are well known to us: unemployment, illicit activities, forced migration and social instability.” In this sense, according to Lario, the World Rural Forum represents a precious way to share experiences and knowledge with a new generation of family-run farms.

Lario’s statements come at the opening of the eighth global conference of the World rural forum, entitled “Family Farming: Sustainability of our Planet” taking place in Alava, Spain from today until March 21st.
