The health ministers of eleven African countries have made a commitment to end malaria deaths by 2030. This declaration was signed during a ministerial conference of the World Health Organization in Yaoundé. To achieve this ambitious goal, the signatory countries have committed to increasing national and international funding.
In fact, the WHO has underlined that the current funding for the fight against malaria is insufficient, with a budget of 4.1 billion dollars, or “just over half of the necessary budget”.
The following countries signed the declaration: Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ghana, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan and Tanzania. The signatory countries are those most affected by the disease in Africa, a region where 95% of deaths occur, according to the WHO.
