Africa: Meloni, Italy wants investments and strategy on the continent

The management of migratory flows in Europe according to redistribution mechanisms is not a solution, it is necessary to go a step further, addressing the issue from a broader perspective and formulating new strategies that change the approach taken up to now also by many European and Western countries in Africa. The Mattei Plan responds at least in part to this change of approach, the new plan developed by the Italian government for the African continent which will be presented in detail on the occasion of the Italy-Africa Conference scheduled in Rome at the end of January. This is the summary of the response given by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to one of the questions at the end-of-year press conference, held on Thursday due to Meloni’s health problems.

“We are not realizing what is happening in Africa,” Meloni said. “On the one hand we have a very rich continent, particularly in raw materials; on the other hand we have areas of strong instability. A certain paternalistic if not predatory approach did not work, even on the European side. We don’t need help, but serious relationships, investments and a strategy.” According to the prime minister, the Mattei Plan intends to provide this type of response with the idea of being a model for Europe and the West at the same time, because Italy alone cannot have a complete solution.

“Africa – said Giorgia Meloni – will be a fundamental theme during the Italian presidency of the G7. The Mattei Plan is further ahead than you think.” The general approach will be to favor certain areas such as energy, training, water, avoiding dispersing forces and resources on an excessive number of themes. With the same perspective, some partner countries will be chosen. At a later stage, areas of intervention and themes could be extended with the help of private investors and other countries.
