Alphabet Inc, the parent company of Google, has laid off 200 team employees in its Core unit as part of a reorganization of divisions. According to CNBC, some positions will be transferred to offices in India and Mexico.
The Core unit is responsible for developing the foundation of the technology used in Google’s main products and ensuring internet security for users. CNBC reported that at least 50 positions were eliminated from an engineering department at the Core unit in Sunnyvale, California. Many of the eliminated positions will be filled in the Mexico and India offices.
Last year, Alphabet announced plans to cut about 6 percent of its workforce, totaling around 12,000 jobs, due to a slowdown in the online advertising market affecting its revenue.
This news comes as Alphabet continues to make strategic changes within its organization to adapt to market conditions and maintain its position as a leader in the technology industry.
