Alta Murgia Barese, the challenge of musical tourism to become a Unesco Geopark

by admin

Author music “en plein air”, even in one of the least populated places in the world, the Alta Murgia rural park, the largest protected rural area in Italy, a 68 thousand hectare tongue in the central part of Puglia, in between the provinces of Dauna and Bari, between the Apulias and Basilicata. It was here, in the middle of the night and with Jazzo Pantano in the background – the jazzo is an ancient rural structure symbolizing the transhumance of sheep and shepherds – that the musician and composer Ludovico Einaudi stopped time. With his piano he enchanted on the evening of August 9 over a thousand fans who came to Gravina di Puglia, in Jazzo Pantano, to listen to songs by Seven Days Walking (Seven days of walking), the album composed around an imaginary journey.

The choice of Einaudi and his music was not accidental. It is in fact one of the intangible assets on which the President of the Park Authority, Francesco Tarantini – who defined the Einaudi concert “an event of rare beauty” – is aiming to nominate the Alta Murgia of Bari in the international temple of Unesco Geoparks. Among naturalistic, geological and archaeological treasures, this natural park therefore plays its challenge to Unesco also with music to increase the chances of its candidacy which will be made official, by the Puglia region, in the coming weeks, and on there will be a decision in spring. 2022. Around the candidacy there are also important economic developments and always with a concrete attention to sustainability. The Alta Murgia park in fact aims to intercept part of the excursion and country tourism flows expected in the Apulian natural parks, chosen this year by one in five Italian tourists, 17% of the total. In short, an open-air choice favored by the existence, in the upper Murgia of Bari, of a network of farmhouses (at least 60), of B & Bs, family houses, farms surrounded by dry stone walls, jazzi, milkers, trulli, sheep tracks. of transhumance.

In the park established in 2004, the tourist moves among woods and rocky scenarios, steppe environments, canyons, rock settlements and geological treasures that are also the must of the Geopark candidacy, immortalized in 1 million stamps for a few days around the world. In this framework, music therefore has its space. The challenge in music at Unesco, a challenge that Tarantini defines as “central to the relaunch of the Park that finally comes back to life”, therefore had the sounds, under the sky, of Einaudi and, before him, in mid-July, those of Talos Festival in Ruvo di Puglia and, from 27 August, in Andria, those of the “Castel dei Mondi” Festival, an international music and theater festival that will have an incomparable natural stage in Castel del Monte, a Frederick manor that dominates the park. Music therefore in Puglia in the parks, in the reserves, “en plein air”, in the farm as for the “VivaFestival2021” in Locorotondo, a small town in the Itria Valley that laps another Murgia existing in Puglia, the Taranto one. Here too, in the first week of August, music concerts, this time contemporary, analogue and digital crossroads dedicated to live streaming worldwide and in presence, held in the masseria rather than in a cove of Savelletri di Fasano, immersed in the light of the Sunrise.
