Gigafactory in Brandenburg: And what’s in it for us?
Tesla had previously assumed that production in Grünheide could start again next Monday. Due to the longer outage, the damage to Tesla is likely to continue to increase. Even without another week of downtime, the company had recently estimated the damage at several hundred million euros. Meanwhile, the energy network operator Edis announced that its emergency services are urgently working to restore supply to the Tesla factory.
Operational failure not only at Tesla
The Model Y is manufactured in Tesla’s only European car factory in Grünheide. The selling price for this is between around 45,000 euros and just under 60,000 euros. According to the company, more than 1,000 vehicles are normally produced per day.
According to one Report of Handelsblatt A logistics center of the Edeka supermarket chain was also affected by the power outage. Around 500 markets in Berlin and Brandenburg could therefore only be supplied to a limited extent.
Apparently left-wing extremist background
Unknown perpetrators set fire to an electricity pylon on Tuesday morning, which is also responsible for supplying electricity to the Tesla factory. The factory was evacuated and production stopped for the time being. Tens of thousands of residents in the region were also affected by the power outage. The left-wing extremist Vulkan group claimed responsibility for the attack and spoke of “extreme exploitation conditions” at Tesla. The Brandenburg police classified the letter of confession as genuine.
After the attack, the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry called for important infrastructure to be better protected from criminal or terrorist-motivated actions and thus to “adapt to the changed security situation”. Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) warned of an “enormous criminal energy” within the violent left-wing extremist scene.
