Biomethane, 5 billion investments expected in five years

by admin

Biogas and biomethane can be the tool through which Italian agriculture achieves the European objectives in terms of carbon neutrality and ecological transition. The data say so: by 2026, thanks to the expansion of existing plants and the construction of new plants in the agricultural sector, Italy could reach a production of biomethane equal to 2.3-2.5 billion cubic meters, from current 236 million. With an investment forecast of 5 billion euros.

These are the numbers presented on the occasion of Biogas Italy 2021, which took place on Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 September in Rome. And these are numbers that speak of a sector with great potential. To date, the Italian biogas consortium reminds us, in Italy we have about 2,000 plants, of which 80% are agricultural, for a total investment of 4.5 billion. Biogas and biomethane can have a decisive impact in the decarbonization process: “Anaerobic digestion, which triggers the production of biogas and biomethane – explained the president of the Italian Biogas Consortium, Piero Gattoni – represents an essential tool for the agroecological transition, essential for the achievement of the decarbonisation and climate objectives. I am convinced that a change of pace within the agricultural and industrial world, with the commitment of the entire supply chain and teamwork in spreading innovative agricultural practices, will allow agriculture to be ready to face the climate challenge “.

The achievement of 5 billion in new investments in the next five years also passes through the PNRR tool: “Thanks to the Recovery and Resilience Plan – declared the Minister of Agricultural Policies, Stefano Patuanelli – we have an indispensable tool for achieving our goals, including the reduction of emissions, the development of renewable energies, the circular economy, the fight against land consumption and hydrogeological instability. And within the NRP, ad hoc interventions are already planned for the development of biogas and biomethane ».
