“Boeing earthquake” after plane crashes: top management gone

The 737 Max crisis leads to a change at Boeing’s top management. CEO Dave Calhoun will step down at the end of 2024, and board chairman Larry Kellner’s resignation will be effective at the annual meeting in May.

Replacing Kellner will be Steve Mollenkopf, who has served on the board since 2020. Additionally, Stan Deal, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, is leaving the company, effective immediately; in his place, Stephanie Pope, who recently became Chief Operating Officer after leading Boeing Global Services.

The change at the top comes at a time when airlines and authorities are asking Boeing for changes within the company, after a series of problems with the production and quality of the planes, not least those which occurred on an Alaska Airlines plane , on January 5, forced to make an emergency landing due to the explosion of a door. In the premarket, Boeing shares gained 2.4%; since the beginning of the year, it has lost 27.5%.

«As you know, the accident on the Alaska Airlines flight was a watershed moment for Boeing. We must continue to respond to this incident with humility and complete transparency. We must also instill a total commitment to safety and quality at every level of the company,” Calhoun said in a letter to employees.
