At least 17,650 Burkinabe students will undergo vocational training to meet the skills needs of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Burkina Faso. This six-year training initiative is part of the Support for Entrepreneurship, Skills Development and Technology Adoption (Ecotec) project, launched last week by the government and the World Bank.

According to the Burkinabé media, the Ecotec project aims to provide SMEs with a competent and productive workforce: “In the end, 17,650 learners will benefit from the training program focused on the needs expressed by stakeholders in the world of work. This will provide businesses with a skilled workforce,” said Hamoud Abdel Wedouk Kamil, World Bank Resident Representative in Burkina Faso. The beneficiaries of the project will be trained following the dual approach that combines theory and practice and, to this end, 750 trainers from vocational training centers will benefit from professional training on how to implement this educational approach.

For the Burkinabé government, the Ecotec project aims to strengthen the private sector by providing support and assistance to 1,300 SME promoters, towards a resilient economy by 2029, the end date of the program. For the implementation of the Ecotec project, the government has mobilized a sum of over 105 billion francs (174 million dollars), of which almost 90 billion came from the World Bank and the rest from its own funds.
