Chinese Researchers Develop New Process for Separating and Recycling Used Power Lithium Batteries

Chinese researchers at the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences have made a significant breakthrough in the development of a new process for separating and recycling used power lithium batteries. This development will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe supply of lithium, nickel, and cobalt in China.

According to a report by Xinhua News Agency on Thursday, the institute’s Green Separation Chemistry and Clean Metallurgy Research Group has successfully developed a new process for the separation and recycling of used power lithium batteries. This development comes at a time when China’s production, use, and export of power lithium batteries rank among the top in the world.

Chen Ji, the leader of the research team, emphasized the importance of lithium battery recovery and recycling in addressing environmental pollution and achieving the “double carbon” goal. Additionally, ensuring the safe supply of lithium, nickel, and cobalt in China is a key aspect of the research.

The Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry plans to independently build a pilot demonstration line for annual processing of 100 tons of waste lithium batteries by 2023. This new extraction line will integrate system evaluation, new process development, and production demonstration.

The research team’s innovative separation process addresses the technical challenges posed by impurity elements in the black powder leachate. The development of new separation process technology aims to achieve energy savings, emission reductions, and production cost reductions.

This innovative research is a key deployment project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and is supported by China’s National Key Research and Development Program. The results of the research have already been published in core journals, and the team has applied for two national invention patents.
