Chongqing, China is slowly emerging as a powerhouse in the automobile industry with massive plans to expand its production and sales, particularly in the smart, connected, and new energy vehicle sector.
According to a report by the Science and Technology Daily reporter Yong Li, after seven years, Chongqing’s automobile output has returned to second place in the country. The second session of the Sixth Chongqing Municipal People’s Congress recently opened, and Chongqing Mayor Hu Henghua announced that the city’s automobile production is set to rank second in the country by 2023, with the output of new energy vehicles reaching 50,000.
Chongqing is aiming to build a world-class intelligent networked new energy automobile industry cluster, with plans to exceed the trillion-level industry scale by 2027. The city has made significant progress in developing an intelligent network-connected new energy vehicle industry cluster, with a year-on-year increase of 30% in new energy vehicle production.
The city has thousands of complete vehicle and parts companies above a designated size, with a production capacity of 4 million vehicles per year. The development of the intelligent networked new energy vehicle industry has also seen the implementation of key projects such as power chips, laser radars, and drive motors.
Chongqing has shown advanced technologies for new energy vehicles such as pure electric, plug-in, extended-range, hydrogen fuel, and battery swap, with a rich “vehicle-road collaboration” scenario. Models like “Avita 12” and “Wenjie M9” are leading the country in terms of intelligence and electrification.
The city is also making strides in its automobile industry, with Changan Automobile’s sales exceeding 2.55 million vehicles in 2023, including a significant increase in the sales volume of independent brand intelligent connected new energy vehicles.
In terms of strengthening breakthroughs in key technologies, Chongqing is focusing on areas like artificial intelligence, big data, and autonomous driving. The city aims to strengthen communication and cooperation among various industries and promote joint research on key technologies to form new productive forces as soon as possible.
Chongqing is set to introduce and implement special action plans for commercial vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, vehicle network integration, and vehicle road and cloud integration in 2024. The city is determined to achieve an automobile manufacturing output value of 550 billion yuan, with a production of 2.6 million units by 2024. By 2027, the city aims to exceed the production and sales of intelligent networked new energy vehicles to reach over 2 million units, with the industrial scale breaking through the trillion level.
