The Digital Markets Act forces Apple to adapt its business model for the App Store in the EU. Like that Wall Street Journal reports, Apple plans to allow the installation of apps from sources other than its own App Store, but similar requirements and restrictions will be introduced for these apps as for the distribution of apps via the App Store.

The Digital Markets Act is actually intended to weaken the control of individual technology companies over certain digital markets and strengthen competition. It is also unclear whether Apple will stick to its commission model for the planned fees or choose a different method. The WSJ’s sources also did not provide any details about how Apple plans to implement an audit of sideloading apps.

What is certain, however, is when Apple has to open its app ecosystem. The Digital Markets Act will apply in all EU countries from February 17, 2024.
