Energy, “accelerate on renewables against the rise in bills”

“To limit the impact of rising energy prices, the solution is to accelerate the development of renewables.” Carlo Tamburi, Italy director of the Enel group, is convinced of this

How do you get out of this price spiral?

This situation highlights the need to accelerate the development of renewables, which represent a price calming factor. The natural resource is free, costs less and makes the country less dependent on supplies from abroad. At the moment the problem is the cost of energy production and not the variability of the fuel: in terms of stability and price predictability, renewables represent a certainty. With renewables it is easier for the consumer to make long-term supply agreements with PPA contracts, which are more widespread abroad but which are slowly arriving in Italy. Companies that consume large amounts of energy are slowly realizing that one way to eliminate price uncertainties is to make long-term contracts. Until recently, they were held back by the prospect of falling prices, but now that wholesale prices are soaring it is clear that the interest in pricing over a medium to long term is increasing.

According to some, it would instead be appropriate to focus more on the supply of gas because renewables have proved to be ineffective

The 2030 decarbonisation goals were increased less than a year ago, they are very challenging for everyone, even for Italy, but no one thinks of questioning them. The point is that to achieve them it is necessary to make the auctions on renewables work and to reduce the authorization times. It seems to me that this need emerged clearly from the assembly of Elettricità Futura, also from the intervention of the president of Confindustria, who expressed concern about the increase in the prices of raw materials but also stressed the need not to retreat in the path to decarbonization.
