Ex-Embraco workers at a crossroads: accept 7,000 euros to go out or risk everything and not sign?

TURIN. The workers of the former Embraco di Riva di Chieri are at a crossroads: accept the agreement proposed by the bankruptcy trustee of Ventures and Chieri Italia (Whirlpool) which offer 7,000 euros gross per worker, renouncing any other claim or not signing at the risk of losing even this figure. An agreement bound by acceptance by 90% of the 391 workers. But for many of them it is “blackmail”.

The answer of every single worker must arrive by December 20 if he refuses, otherwise silent consent is valid. «When we found ourselves at the crossroads 60,000 euros or a job we chose the job. Today, after almost 4 years, the crossroads is 7,000 euros gross or nothing. I would say that perhaps the dignity of the person leads to say no because this indecent proposal would be a further setback. But – comments Maurizio Ughetto – after 4 years of layoffs they hope to find workers on their knees. But workers who are on their knees thanks to them ».

The Piedmont Region is already activating a path of active policies with the Employment Centers. Meetings are underway to establish the modalities of action and the real opportunities but it is evaluated to create an individual path for workers with training programs and an attempt to find job offers compatible with their skills. The redundancy fund for all, in fact, will expire on 22 January. «We are waiting for answers from the Mise, it is not possible that there are no official communications and that in all this time an alternative has not been found. For us, the plan was and was Italcomp, officially presented by Mise unlike what Minister Giorgetti claims, who says it never existed. We will try to do everything, we will not leave the workers alone, ”says the regional councilor for work, Elena Chiorino.

Meanwhile, recourse to layoffs is falling in Piedmont. In October 7.2 million hours were authorized by INPS.

Compared to September 2021, the total number of hours authorized has almost halved (-47.1%); the reduction concerned all types of layoffs, including the extraordinary cig which in September had registered a sharp increase compared to August (+ 230%). In October, 55% of the authorized hours concerned industry; the remaining 45%, largely the trade sector. In the first 10 months of 2021, 209.9 million hours of cig were authorized in Piedmont, one third less than in the same period of 2020, in the midst of the Covid crisis.

Just over half (52%) of the total hours of cig authorized in Piedmont in October comes from the Metropolitan City of Turin. «The comparison with the other regions – comments the economist Mauro Zangola – once again sees us all the more virtuous. In Piedmont in October the total hours of cig were reduced compared to September by 47.1%, compared to -10.2 in Lombardy, -21.9% in Emilia Romagna and + 14.6% in Veneto “. And he concludes: «The analysis of the data provided by INPS on the use of cig by Piedmontese companies leads us to be optimistic about the future of our economy. Even from this limited but important angle of view it emerges that Piedmont is leaving behind the worst period of the pandemic crisis ». –
