The energy transition is not cheap. To intervene on the former Ilva in terms of environmental pollution “the roads are unfortunately not easy, it takes time but you have to hurry”, said the Minister of Ecological Transition Roberto Cingolani at Porta a Porta explaining that “in the Next generation plan We have foreseen an important intervention that must take the first step to decarbonise, pass at least the largest of the electric blast furnaces because now it burns coal and this means changing the fuel. It is not the ideal phase but it is transitional. It will have to start now, in a very decisive way and with very important investments: 2 billion for the hard to abbot, that is, difficult to break down “as steel is called in the EU Commission”.
The timing of the transition
How long it will take for the transition of the former Ilva “depends on how good we are”, said Minister Cingolani, noting that the problem is bureaucratic, “how long it takes us to give permits”. Ilva, the minister continued, «is part of that sector of industries that are very important for the economies of advanced countries and in particular of steel that is called in the EU commission hard to abate, that is, difficult to break down. Unfortunately these are production lines that generate a huge amount of both climate-altering gases and dusts and other pollutants that we breathe, so the effect is double: pollution and a major contribution to climate change ». The transition, he continued, “began with the commissioner works but unfortunately it is not digital, that is, it is not instantaneous. An entire sector must be set up. Then this presupposes the transition to hydrogen in the future, hopefully soon. I would like to clarify – Cingolani specified – everyone likes green hydrogen which is obtained with renewable technologies that do not produce carbon dioxide but it takes some time ».
