If companies use the leverage of working hours to poach scarce skilled workers from each other, this does not mean that there are more skilled workers per se. And if you shorten working hours for everyone by law or collective agreement, then you reduce the working capacity of the economy. I don’t want to demonize it, a society can definitely decide to work less overall. But you can’t be naive. The idea that we can work less overall but get the same results is illusory. A four-day week for everyone will not lead to economic ruin – but it will reduce our prosperity.
