After years of bringing his mother-in-law’s sweet sorullitos to family gatherings, Gilberto Luna decided to turn his love for the traditional Puerto Rican appetizer into a thriving business. Luna, a resident of Aibonito, started Mama Toña’s Artisanal Sorullitos in 2016, and the brand has quickly become a hit across the island.
Using his mother-in-law’s decades-old recipe, Luna began selling the sweet corn sorullitos to friends and co-workers during the Christmas season. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with Luna noting that “of every 10 people who tried them, the acceptance was 9.5 because they are sweet sorullos.”
With the help of a friend who offered him space in the old Aibonito Industrial Park, Luna now produces about 20,000 sorullitos daily. The business also creates other artisanal products, such as cheese-filled balls and cream cheese and guava paste-filled treats.
Despite the high production rate, Luna emphasizes that each sorullito is still made by hand and passed through multiple hands before reaching consumers. The products come in various shapes and flavors to cater to different preferences and are packaged in sizes ranging from 12 to 48 units.
The success of Mama Toña’s Artisanal Sorullitos has led to placement in 80 supermarkets and 150 restaurants across Puerto Rico. Luna’s dedication to quality and authenticity has resonated with customers, ensuring that his sweet sorullitos remain a favorite snack for many.
