A batch of Goya brand red beans manufactured by Tradewind Foods, Inc. in Puerto Rico has been voluntarily withdrawn and collected after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found cans that were bulging and leaking liquid during a routine inspection.
The affected batch, lot A2402-8BB, consists of 32,376 cans of 15.5-ounce red beans. Goya de Puerto Rico, Inc. has confirmed that the voluntary withdrawal process has been completed, but recommends that consumers check their homes for cans with the code A2402-8 and an expiration date of 04/03/2029.
The affected cans were distributed only in Puerto Rico and Santa Cruz. The CDC advises against consuming canned products that show signs of damage, as they may contain harmful bacteria like clostridium botulinum, which causes botulism – a serious disease affecting the nervous system.
Symptoms of botulism include difficulty breathing, muscle paralysis, and weakness in various muscle groups. If you have cans from this batch or with the specified expiration date, it is recommended not to use the product. Please refer to the FDA website for more information on the affected batch.
