Granarolo, in 2020 targets reached and acceleration on sustainability

by admin

MILAN (ITALPRESS) – Granarolo closed the 2020 financial year with a consolidated turnover of 1,280 million euros, a decrease of 3% compared to the previous year, and recording an operating margin of 78.5 million, equal to 6.1% of revenues, in line with company forecasts and an 8% improvement compared to 2019. “Positive results”, Gianpiero Calzolari, president of the Granarolo group, comments in an interview with Italpress: “In the worst year for the world economy since the Second World War we have reached our budget targets”. Group sales are traditionally concentrated in Italy, for a share of 66.8% of revenues. Distribution in Europe increased slightly, equal to 1%, while that on non-European markets dropped significantly, recording a -10.9%. Overall, on the foreign front, turnover reaches 33% of the total, confirming a stable distribution compared to the previous year. “Although it is true that we are a category that has been allowed to work, a part of the market has completely disappeared, I am thinking of the whole issue of HoReCa, with which we make a turnover of about 300 million: the product mix has changed. From the fresh product to a pantry product “, underlines Calzolari. The social changes imposed by the “new normal” penalize consumption outside the home: the whole channel records a loss of 40.7%, while Granarolo brings a contraction between 25% and 30% on average, with peaks of -80% since March in May. This in favor of domestic consumption, with a change in the spending mix: above all, commodity products with a longer shelf life, such as milk up to 30 days in duration and long-life milk, were favored. The prospects for 2021 are still uncertain: “Paradoxically – says Calzolari – the year started worse, because in 2020 we had had at least a couple of good months, while this year the various measures have largely confirmed the closures. Compared to last year we have more awareness and we have developed an organization “. Optimism is right for Calzolari: “Let’s see it, I don’t mean full, but at least half full the glass, otherwise we wouldn’t be entrepreneurs”. There will be “a before and after vaccines, even before a before after Covid. Surely there is a desire to consume and socialize, when it is possible to do it safely I imagine we will start again”. The group is strongly committed to sustainability. “We have been discussing the objectives of the agenda for some time and we have carefully followed all the discussions that took place in Europe with the Green Deal and the Farm to Fork for everything related to food”, explains Calzolari, who adds: ” Today the agri-food industry, with a correct management, can have a positive approach. The increase of biogas in our plants will allow on the one hand to reduce emissions into the atmosphere, to avoid compromising the groundwater, to reduce the chemistry used on the ground. but also not to use a large part of fossil energy. This is a classic example of a circular economy “. On this, in addition to investments, technology also helps a lot. There is no shortage of both in Granarolo: the first stage of the long-term strategic plan, with the evocative title of # bontáresponsabile, is the launch of a new package of fresh milk that allows a 16% reduction in plastic compared to the previous 1 liter version, with the use of 25% recycled plastic (R-Pet) and an anchored cap that does not leak into the environment. A solution that, underlines Calzolari, “anticipates the Community legislation that will come into force in the coming years”. (ITALPRESS). bla / sat / red 02-Apr-21 11:51 am
